Mr Beane- legend!

During the week, I think I was slightly controversial at our church's prayer meeting. During the pre-prayer conversation, the others in my group were talking about how Christians are unfairly treated in favour of other religions and how university CU's are being victimised. One person said we should be a people who stand and make a fuss about these things. I disagreed. I think Christians are good at whining in this way and I think this contributes to the bad press we get. I said we should stand up and make a fuss about the things that are really important like slavery and world poverty and be known for our positive stand on issues rather than moaning about things (look at the Jerry Springer case in particular).

What a refreshing change to read about Mr Beane (no, not Rowan Atkinson!) well actually I guess he's actually the Reverend Beane, the Spixworth vicar who is quoted in the Evening News article:

“This whole idea about environmental concern is a really Christian belief.

“We believe we had a God who created the Universe and then gave to humanity this creation to care for.

“We are the stewards of creation and have to care for it, but sometimes we don't make a very good job. In our own small ways we can make a difference and together we can make a big difference.”

Case in point. What a positive way to deal with such a serious issue and what a witness. Mr Beane- legend!

In my mind, that's not controversial, that's common sense. Well done for saying so.

Much as I agree with you Helen, I think there are one or two points you need to attend to first.

These issues of world poverty and slavery are far too tedious. It’s much better if we can spot someone in league with Satan whose actions we can interpret as a vicious attack on Christianity. This does wonders for Christian sense of mission because it is evidence that we are not a marginalised group after all but important enough to warrant attention. We can then scream down hell and damnation outside the premises of the damned and thus claw back a bit of self-respect and get ourselves in the paper. Kooks for Christ.

If we pick issues that don’t stretch comprehension and patience we are then undistracted by a cognitive encounter with the world and we can then pull out all the stops and give full expression to our naked passion for Christ - like a football crowd shouting for the home side it helps provide an instinctual and primeval sense of identity, group connection, purpose, importance and destiny. Spirituality equates to simplicity and passion (clearly that’s what “fools for Christ” really means) and to us “justice” means prefixing everything with “just”: E.G. “We just want to glorify God”, “we just want to show our passion for Christ”, “we are just a load of simple Christains who just want to keep saying ‘just’ until everyone is just sick of hearing it”.

Why campaign on long-term difficult issues requiring a modicum of cause and effect comprehension, when they are much more cathartic abreactive type opportunities demanding no deep reflection at all and yet are so therapeutic to the Christian’s sense of cosmic significance.

Come off it Helen, givesa break; go try whistling in the wind.

[Now that’s what I call off-the-scale controversial]

Thanks for that specific word from the Lord brother! God has mightily used you! Bless you brother!

(PS hope Helen doesn't mind us using her blog to hold a spiritual rave - all these spiritual superlatives are a bit like left over beer cans. She'll probably recycle them, so that they can be re-used endlessly -like they are already!)

environmentally friendly throw-away neologisms?

Makings of a policy-less Cameron policy surely...
