Advent Calendar Day Eleven

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
Luke 2:1-5
This is the only gospel account of the journey that Mary and Joseph had to do and with a little research have found that it was about 70 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem and they could have done the journey in about 4 days but it is more likely that it took them a week. That's a lot of travelling! Luckily I don't have to do much travelling over the Christmas period although this time next week, I will be going to London to stay with my mum for a few days. It's a hundred mile journey but going by train cuts the journey time to 2 hours.
Today's reflection is on all the journeys travelled in this Christmas period. I pray that they are safe and refreshing.

Great picture.

It must be European...(because Mary and Joseph look like European peasants) I will guess Dutch?

Not sure, but just realised that it must be a painting of the flight into Egypt as Jesus has been born in it.

Looks like a piece of Victorian romanticism! Actually the picture is very reminiscient of the depictions on the front of the "texts" that accompanied my Sunday lessons. (What's that say about my age?)
