At some point I signed up for mailshots from Delirious? and unusually, I read the latest one which is promoting their new album The Mission Bell. There were several reviews and I kept on thinking "Yeah, good review but it is from a Christian publication". I then came to the final one which reads:
“…fuelled by the unbridled passion of singer Martin Smith… without God they could be massive.” –Q Magazine
I think this is a huge statement! If they would "just tone their message down" they could achieve massive things in the UK chart. Well I think anyway... Good on them for not following that route.

I think a Christian musician of the eighties spotted the problem here when he sang:
When the ratings point the camera’s eye
They can state the facts while telling a lie
When the godless chair the judgment seat
We can thank the godless media elite
They can silence those who fall from their grace
With a note that says ‘we haven’t the space’
Well lookee there – the dog’s asleep
Whenever we march or say a peep
A Christian can’t get equal time
Unless he’s a looney committing a crime.
(Steve Taylor)
Clearly Delirious have got a lot of catching up to do in Looney department to point the camera’s eye. However, since the eighties one or two Christains have learnt the lesson: Gerald Coates, Benny Hinn, Pat Robertson to name a few. As for crime you’ve got to go back to the seventies, with Moses David, “Children of God” leader. Unfortunately without resorting to some heavy-duty language I can’t do justice to his activities, and as we know expletives get deleted from this highly respectable blog pretty d**m quick.
fortunately Q are wrong - without God they would be nothing. And who gives two hoots about the music industry in this country. The Christian music business is worth plenty in the USA and Delirious are plenty big enough over there. Why, I even heard one of their tracks being played in the Las Vegas branch of Abercrombie & Fitch. And don't forget they supported Bon Jovi a couple of years back.
ps they have nothing to prove
The irony of the statement is delicious but actually being low key about God could gain access to more listeners. They have obviously taken the very brave decision of leading those who are allready Christians but I don't think we can ignore the fact that they could very easily have taken a different route. That's what Q are saying in a round about way...
I have to say I agree with the line from Q Magazine.
People that are talented (which they clearly are) and are christian have to distinct choices. The can make the focus of their talent to express their beliefs or they can choose not to alienate an audience yet live out perfectly healthy christian lives in the background.
They have clearly chosen the first route - and thats great - but comes at a cost I guess.
